Dentures
Replacement teeth or dentures can be a benefit to you whether you are missing all or just a few of your natural teeth.
*Dentures can be made to resemble your natural teeth so there will be little change in your appearance.
*Dentures can give you a more confident smile by filling out your face and profile.
There are two main denture types.
*Conventional dentures are made and inserted after the remaining teeth have been extracted and tissue has healed.
*Immediate dentures are inserted right away after removal of the remaining teeth. The benifit of immediate dentures is that you dont ever have to be without teeth, although readjustments may need to be made after your gums have healed.
Getting used to dentures.
*Learning to wear your new dentures can take time.
Common changes with dentures.
*Loose feel when your tongue and cheek muscles learn to keep them in place.
*Minor irritation or soreness.
*Temporary increase in saliva flow
*Changes in the way you speak. Reading aloud can help correct and minor speech problems.
*Becoming accustomed to chewing and eating. Cutting foods into small portions is a good idea.
Follow-up appointments are generally needed.
*Those who choose immediate dentures need to keep them in until the follow-up appointment the next day.
*During healing, dentures act much like a bandage.
*You should continue to see your dentist to ensure that the tissue under the denture remains healthy and that the dentures fit you properly.
Most insurance companies will pay for the relining of dentures every five to seven years.
